The internal turmoil has since escalated, with the Trinamool Congress splitting into two factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly.
The political upheaval has further intensified after 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha Members of Parliament merged with the little-known National Citizens' Party of India and pledged their support to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.
Chandrima Bhattacharya's resignation, coupled with the party's organizational split and the large-scale defection of Members of Parliament, underscores the deepening crisis within the Trinamool Congress and signals a significant shift in West Bengal's political landscape.
